They have been quite explicit about that, and just recently once again demonstrated their willingness to slaughter civilians. The only reason Palestine exists is because Israel is unwilling to play by the same rulebook.
I agree with your sentiment that Israel has a right to defend itself. That said, I think the reason folks are saying you’re wrong is because Israel just bombed the hell out of Gaza, which killed fighters and civilians alike.
