the mayor says … "Either raise taxes to build the infrastructure to get the housing, or not build the infrastructure and not get the housing.”

Normally I’d be in the user fees camp, but this is a crisis.

They need to pay more in property taxes, no? Why do people think they get their cake and it can be recouped by destroying the next generation’s quality of life and disposable income? Pay for your own stuff

Although I agree, “pay for your own stuff” would mean that new homeowners should pay for the sewer/road hookups. AFAIU that’s done through development fees.

That’s a philosophical question: What’s fairer? New home owners pay for their hookups, or everyone shares the cost?

I’d lean to the former, but that’s just me.

Since we’re trying to encourage new builds, lowering the cost of construction makes sense. So up everyone’s property taxes.

Or introduce more usage fees. But that screws poor people. 🤷

Getting rid of development charges doesn’t make things cheaper for people

You’re right that it just goes to property taxes but it also means you still qualify for the same mortgage so houses can be sold for the same price

Another way to look at it is buyers will have to pay for it for 30 years while retirees can just move to places that aren’t seeing massive expansion
