I have been craving a game with lots of loot and lots of clicking, so I have been thinking about starting to play Grim Dawn, which just received a big update. Now, I’m asking the fine folks on Hexbear what they think about Grim Dawn in the year of our Lord 2023. Fun builds? Tips or tricks? Things I should know, etc.?

I haven’t touched it in years, but I never did finish the second DLC. Might start a fresh playthrough and do another laser necromancer.

It really is an amazing ARPG. Has more layers of customization and skill/equipment synergy than in any other game I’ve encountered. You can make all sorts of crazy builds. Buy it. It’s damn good.

It’s a great game, feels very complete.

Excellent build variety, good loot progression, story is nice and soundtrack is excellent the game was meant to be inspired by now, but the studio just can’t help themselves.

For something similar and more modern think about Last Epoch

The new update is really good. Potions being a cool down skill is great.

The in-built evade can be a game changer as well. Loving it for giving my casters more mobility.

The beginners tips you find online still apply.

While leveling make sure you put points into your class’s mastery bar. I normally do 2 points in mastery, one in an ability.

Choose one ability to max out first, rather than spreading points too far.

Choose one or two damage types to focus on.

Defense is often more important than offense.

Keep your health at at least your level * 100. Minimum.

Resistances are everything in the harder modes. They will also make your life much easier in the first mode. So it’s worth figuring out the main damage types of the area you’re in and use components to up those resistances.

Of the 3 attributes physique is often the most important for the health. The other 2 do give some health now. If I’m doing a caster for instance I do 2 points in physique and 1 on spirit. But I think the general advice is put it all in physique except what you need for equipping items.

Keep an eye on your defensive and offensive power. With defense make sure you can’t be critted and for offense make sure you have a good hit %

All class combinations are viable. Some do better than others in the end game or are more gear dependent.

Everything can be reset (if you have all the DLCs) except your class choices. But you can often make max level without choosing a second class so there’s no pressure.

It’s easily one of my favourite games and each expansion so far has been great.

So much customisation through class combinations and items.

The new DLC is going to introduce another class so that’s a lot more combinations on the way.

It is by far the best arpg out there at the moment. It’s performance can be worse than it should be depending on hardware. You can copy paste an explored map on an old character to new one, there aren’t any randomized maps like in D2 so this is just a quality of life thing rather than a cheat.

There are 2 stats called offensive ability and defensive ability that are very important, they determine your chance to hit, be hit, crit, and receive a crit.

It’s a really good game. It’s hard to figure out, though. I’ve played it off and on for three years and recently got more serious about it. Now that I’m more serious, I consult grimtools.com to figure out when to farm for shit and when not to. It’s a handy web site because the game kind of expects you to know stuff that you don’t know about what you’re supposed to do. I can get in the zone with this game for hours because of how balanced the random stuff is. It’s definitely designed to try out various characters. The only downside is that there are definitely character types to avoid. That’s why grimtools.com is available. You really don’t need anything more than that at this point. The game is old and the tools website gives you the info you need.

It’s better than most and where diablo should have gone after 2 the developers keep improving it. New expansion is due or out? Haven’t checked but enough to have me excited to get back to playing. Just going through stuff atm that has gaming taking a backseat
