The same guy demanded we be reported to the FBI because we are “definitely in violation of the Patriot Act.” which was very hilarious to me.

I was not even aware the Patriot Act did anything other than give law enforcement more latitude to invade one’s privacy.

Took another peek at it, money laundering and terrorism seem to be the only two things that’s talking about. Sorta weird way of saying that tbh.

That’s, uhhh, that’s a statement. I can’t quite tell if it’s extremely well written satire or genuinely concerning.

Holy wall of text, Batman! Dude seems like he’s cracking under the pressure of what I can only assume is intense scrutiny from all the whinging on/from other instances. Now for the post itself.

Banning excessive racism and general hate, sure, advertising (spam), sure, calls/plans for violence, sure, pro-pedophilia posts, sure I guess, really depends on what they define as “pro-pedophilia,” seeing as they have de-federated us, probably the limp-dick “anything that can be construed as a child is pedophilia”, and a few things that are just him repeating himself, except the… Patriot act? Why the Patriot Act? Guess he’s including money laundering? Terrorism is covered by the plans for violence, so idk what he’s on about. Weird choice whatever.

Bunch of stuff that appears to be venting about whiners constantly whining about his criticisms/disgust for certain individuals/actions that so happen to be part of/involve the whiner’s pet demographic/groups.

He’s here to debate/argue, and as a minority opinion he’s getting more than he bargained for I guess?

And finally the last half of the post is just “I can’t be racist, I have a black friend” which is nice, but nobody he’s arguing with/being denounced by will accept that. He’s gotta just deal with the fact that anyone who doesn’t like his opinion is going to pigeon-hole him into whatever evil demographic they can come up with in an attempt to discredit him via ad hominem, and failing that, a slew of red herrings and demands for signals of virtue to distract from whatever he was talking about. Welcome to the new internet, the fanatics will never take a debate in good faith, figure out how to work around that as a minority opinion.

Hard to read, but I did make it to Robin Williams and “The Birdcage”.

That rustled up some memories of popping in that huge Laserdisc as a kid and seeing Robin Williams dressed like a pelican. Good performance.

Oh no, I didn’t have one myself. I just heard about Laserdisc talked about so much but I don’t know anyone who owned one.

LD had the best available versions of Star Wars until the DVD bonus discs, and excellent CD quality audio. Of course now there is 4K77 (etc). After DVD came out you could pick up LD players and discs for cheap on eBay. I had a decent collection, but it was all eventually replaced with DVD and then Blu-ray.

What was the experience like placing those massive discs onto the tray? Do the discs feel heavy and unwieldy?

You could grip it between the center hole and outside edge. A little heavy, but wasn’t too bad. It was basically like an oversized CD or DVD player. One advantage of the large disc size is that they had basically record-sized sleeves, so you could get some great art, especially if it required two discs and folded open. You could hear the player spin up the disc which sounded almost dangerous sometimes (kinda exciting!). At the end of the first side, the laser would physically move to “flip” to the other side of the disc.

Huh. It looks like images aren’t working all across that instance. I did some quick digging and found that they’ve been broken for 3 days now:

    https://exploding-heads.com/post/126720

And it seems like this isn’t a one-off issue they’ve been dealing with:

Aside from the schizo babble, it seems like this instance is having quite a few issues that I’d be interested in knowing just what’s exactly going wrong here.

From the tidbits I’ve read in other drama communities, it seems like either they’re attracting the dregs of society that are hellbent on spewing as much vitriol as possible, or they’re getting false-flagged as hard as possible by a brigade that posts as much terrible stuff as they can in an attempt to get them defederated from as much as possible, but I repeat myself.

From what it seems like this person is the “second in command” of that instance. Make of that what you will.

Oh you’re talking about technical issues, I was saying they’ve been being brigaded or at least flooded for at least a week or two since the reddit wave started crashing in, and weathering the chaos that sort of thing usually entails.

It’d certainly help if they made signups on approval only. That captcha is too flimsy to evade bot signups.

I’ve had very little trouble keeping this instance running and if I an issue crops up, I’m usually on it and fix it within a couple of hours when I get to it.

Aside from potential hardware issues being a potential variable thrown in the mix, Lemmy’s logs pretty much spell out what’s wrong and why something is happening. All one needs to do is actually read them.

Tbf, this is running on a dedi and I’ve been interested in this server/sysadmin hobby since I was a late teen. So I have a lot of experiences to go off of and usually know where to look when an issue arises.

With that being said, they did us a favor in defederating us. I do not want to see that culture war poison on here, and I’m sure others here share that same sentiment. Blocking their numerous communities on a user level would be a pain.

This was also brought to my attention:

This is absolutely unacceptable and in no way would I accept this if this was the outcome of an upgrade. I’d be getting those posts back, whatever it took. And our numerous redundancies make this easier than it sounds.
