First Minister Mark Drakeford only learned he would be taking key decisions on Covid restrictions three days before the first UK-wide lockdown came into effect on March 23, 2020, it has emerged.

The timeline of the Welsh Government discovering the power it would hold was detailed to the Covid Inquiry during the third day of the evidence sessions it is holding in Cardiff as part of its specific module focusing on Wales.

The counsel to the inquiry leading on the Welsh module, Tom Poole KC, questioned an expert witness on the debate within the UK government on the right powers to use to respond to the pandemic - and the impact on Wales of its decision to use public health legislation which meant all key decision-making powers would be devolved to Wales.
