If you do any kind of machining, 3D printing, or PCB layout, you probably have at least considered buying a pair of calipers. Old-fashioned ones had a dial and were mechanical devices, but lately, …
Oh yeah, great tools. The old mechanical ones, though?Just as good. According to people I know, anyway. The cheap digital ones in particular are still great for 3D printing stuff but not necessarily actually as precise as a high-quality old analogue caliper.
they’re probably far from as acurate as an old school caliper. it’s a fairly new thing that cheap calipers (digital and otherwise) have started getting made.
that said, for 3d printing…the cheapos are usually “good enough”
Where’s my Vernier gang at?!?!
Although my god, even a halfway decent set of dial calipers is extremely satisfying to use.
There’s a great teardown on Big Clive’s YT channel. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKSSY1gzCEs
Really interesting just how accurate they are, and they don’t require professional calibration over time (from what I understand).
