Teachers at a top private school in Wales have walked out in a row over pensions and pay. Members of the NEU Cymru at the Cathedral School in Llandaff, Cardiff, went on strike on Thursday and will take action again next week.

The school, which has around 800 pupils from nursery up to age 18, charges fees up to £5,308 a term. But it has not increased teacher pay and pensions in line with the state sector and teachers are also angry at changes to their pensions, the union said.

A spokesman for the school said it was in a “challenging economic environment”. Contingency plans are in place to remain open “for as many pupils as possible on the planned days of industrial action” but talks have broken down and the matter has now gone to Acas, the national mediation service.
