I’ll pick this one up eventually. Still need to finish Zero Dawn, which I was playing on my Deck recently while traveling. It’s a good game so far and I’m glad to see Sony games making it to PC.

Very much not. It’s a big open world with lots of exploring. But of the symbols everywhere type of map. There’s a few boss fights but they are generally pretty fun. I can solidly recommend the first game. I haven’t played the second yet.

I’ll add that it’s like Monster Hunter World, except the fights are generally much shorter. Everything has some kind of obvious weakness, and good setup makes them go relatively quick.

I also recommend the first one (haven’t played the second).

So satisfying taking out a whole herd of the deer things with 5 or 6 shots to the exploding tanks on their backs.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition has officially arrived on Steam, and thankfully it does work on Linux Desktop / Steam Deck.

In the Steam release announcement the developers noted “We will continue to make optimizations to improve compatibility on handheld PC gaming devices” so hopefully the experience on Steam Deck will get improvements in that.

Additionally they’re working on bringing AMD FSR 3 including Frame Generation in a future update.

So Proton Hotfix likely has some adjustments in it needed for the best experience.

Steam Deck shots provided by one of our Discord moderators, running it on the default settings (click to enlarge):

Good to see another fresh release working thanks to Proton!

Good to see another fresh release working thanks to Proton! Early areas at least seem to give around 30FPS, but as we know from games this big, later areas may bring performance down just like the first game that can cause some issues.

    Well, that sounds encouraging!

Will probably pick this up eventually, hopefully after some optimization

Loved the story of the first one but the cat is out of the bag, so to say. Is there any fundamental/existential mystery in the sequel?

I don’t know anything about the second one (on purpose, because I don’t want to spoil the experience), but I hope they explore the main antagonist more. Since we already have setup for the world, that should allow them to really build on that narrative.

Yes. Quite a bit. FW is at least as story-rich as ZD.

I also enjoy its gameplay more, even though the first one was already very enjoyable.

I’m considering Forbidden West a let down of a sequel. Zero Dawn is one of my all time favourite games, and I couldn’t bring myself to finish Forbidden West. They removed the whistling so stealth attacks are almost impossible. The equipment got unnecessarily complicated. Every enemy has been given a range attack so distance fighting is also impossible. The stupid chess game, because everything has to have its own Gwent now. Some of these issues might be fixable with mods on PC.

That’s really interesting, I guess that’s a play style thing huh. For me having just played the dlc very early on into my playthrough of zero dawn (I was level 18 when I started lol) I can definitely see those qualities coming through. And my god is it fun, I’ve never had more fun fighting enemies than I did in that dlc. Enemies having more ranged attacks pushed the difficulty perfectly for me. If anything your comment has made me more excited for the game. Thanks

I loved ZD too, and those changes sound horrible. Very disappointing. I know it’s been out in PS for a while but I largely ignored it since I don’t have that console, and figured I’d wait for PC release. This probably solidifies me waiting for another year to get it closer to 50% off than anytime soon at nearly full price.

I loved ZD but I enjoy playing FW more. I find the combat better for my play style, and I’ve even done some of the hunting ground challenges which I found horrible in the first game.

I agree about the board game, except you can do as I do and just not play it. I don’t feel like I’m missing out on anything by skipping it.
