Where I’m from you can already set your banking app as the default payment app and not use google pay.

My bank (i think the only bank here that did offer nfc payments) shut that feature down this year because of “lack of interest” and now buggers me to add my card to Google pay. I specifically switched banks last year because of this feature 😑

Apparently it can. I think I tried it once when they had a promotion but hard to remember.
Wait, is that not already an option? My phone came with Samsung Wallet as the default, but when I downloaded Google Pay (or whatever it’s called now after 4 name changes) it asked me which one to use and I’ve never seem Samsung Wallet again.
Google Wallet > Android Pay > Google Pay > GPay > Google Wallet
