    Wow.

Almost three years into a new console generation, but let’s port it to a 10 year-old console instead.

Well, it does make sense. Xbox consoles already have it through backwards compatibility, porting it to PS4 means PS5 users can also play it. It seems like a straight port, not a remaster.

Which means nothing in terms of graphics or performance improvements.

And no doubt Rockstar/Take Two will ask a premium price for it.

How much improvements in graphics are you asking for on a port to the Switch?

People bitch and moan about games not being available. And then they always criticize games when they’re available. What happened to just enjoying a good game for what it is?

I recently bought RDR for my Series S, upon seeing the thumbnail my first thought was I should have waited, but now seeing this I’m probably better off with the 360 version, got it cheap 👍🏻

This could be one step towards that. A PS4 release means it’s been ported to x86 hardware (the 360 did not have x86 hardware and the X1/XSX version is basically emulation with enhancements)

The Switch should run it fine, it’s about as powerful as the consoles the game originally came out on.

Okay, but those don’t run on ps4/5 or switch and they aren’t selling it on PC so what’s the problem?

It’s okay for developers to re release old games on modern consoles. It’s okay.

without even a FPS boost to 60fps? For £50

nah, thats not ok. by any stretch.

Especially when the PS3 version was (as far as I recall) available streamed on PS+ Premium tier/PS Now

Not for full price, usually this would be a 20 dollar straight up purchase, and for games like Skyrim if you already owned a copy you’d get the upgrade for free. This is a cash grab.

A release on a modern console worth 50 dollars would have been a remaster. See Halo MCC and Mass Effect Legendary edition there for examples of good rerelease price vs payoff

Skyrim is a terrible example TBH. That game has been released and rereleased for full price over and over and over again on every platform under the sun. It barely ever even goes on sale.

Big +1 for Xenia, most people here are technical enough to get it working. RDR on Xenia (canary specifically) worked extremely well for me, had exactly 2 crashes through my whole 50ish hour playthrough.

Switch Users - This is amazing, will be able to play Red Dead Redemption on the go

PS5 Users - a 10 year old game, with no fps boost, no graphics boost, for £50? **** Off R*

I’ll never understand, but it must be working out for them. I can’t think of any other AAA non-first party devs that don’t release on all platforms at the same time (even if the PC version is a mess). Makes you appreciate the likes of Bethesda, Activision, etc a little more even for all the shit they pull, but makes you REALLY appreciate the Larians out there.

This port is like two to three years too late. Playing AAA games from over a decade ago on the go is not as interesting as it used to be on switch.

Yeah, the hardware when handheld is about what the PS3/Xbox 360 gen could do, just with a bit more RAM.

I wouldn’t expect 60 fps, but it should be about what the original was, even if it’s the usual Rockstar “can’t be arsed” unoptimised mess.

Since RDR2 is a prequel, I wonder how many people out there played through 2’s story, and then just wanted to see the grim, slow turnout to the story of that gang. It IS kinda surprising it was never available on PS4 - a lot of PS360 games got “silent ports” that just never got much advertising.

Apparently the PS3 version was a huge mess, which lends itself to the fact that it never made it to PS4. I do wonder though, how they went about remastering this version. Will be really interesting to see a breakdown from Digital Foundry once it’s available.

They’re probably using the 360’s codebase as the basis for these ports. This is quite common for ports of games from that generation, as it is much more difficult to port PS3 code than PC or 360 code.

Someone shared this in a Discord server I’m in:

Take-Two Chairman and CEO Strauss Zelnick: “…we don’t just port titles over, we actually take the time to do the very best job we can making the title different for the new release, for the new technology that we’re launching it on.https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/rockstar-owner-discusses-remasters-strategy-says-its-not-interested-in-simple-ports/ [2021]

I guess that memo got lost.

They also managed to botch the GTA trilogy remaster though, so I don’t know what to think of this.
