These are just the chihuahuas barking. Neither Canada, nor anyone else who came out and said they’ve “granted Ukraine permission to use their long-range missiles” (Finland, Holland, and I think Latvia) have given Ukraine any long-range missiles.

We are not talking about “permission”, we are talking about access to encrypted targeting data, satellite control systems and digital signatures/passwords to enable the weapons to actually arm themselves and hit targets. The only relevant countries here are the US, UK and France, i.e. the ones who actually produce the weapons, control their restrictions, and have the satellite infrastructure to guide them.

The UK is gung-ho about letting their missiles loose on Russia, but the US is quite hesitant (despite public proclamations). There’s three reasons for this:

    a) The fact that Russia has the capability (and has warned it will do so), to take out the satellites that control these weapons, as well as other satellites belonging to these nations as retaliation.

    b) The threats of Russia that it will arm the Houthis with anti-ship missiles and will aid the Iranians to attack US military installations in the Middle East. Both those events could be catastrophic for the US in quite a few ways.

    c) Russia has made it clear that any such move will be considered an act of war, and neither the US, nor the Europeans are willing to risk going to full war with Russia at this point (again, despite the public barking and posturing)

Meanwhile, Macron has realized that trying so hard to drum up support for sending the French army to the Ukrainian fields to die, was one of the reasons that he probably lost the elections. Indeed, notice how silent he has fallen on the topic since the first round of the parliamentary elections. Hence, France is unlikely to support the escalation.

So what we are seeing are just empty proclamations from countries that have absolutely no capacity to fulfill them, as a means of applying pressure on the US to say “yes” to Ukraine’s petition. They keep saying “permission granted” and keep acting as if NATO has called a vote on what to do, which is not at all what’s happening. Trudeau, and others who have done this, are also trying to reap the rewards of appearing to be “strong”, “patriotic”, “anti-Russia” and “pro-Ukraine”.

Trudeau honestly sounded pretty nervous in his speech, so his posturing really isn’t having the impact he probably wanted it to. Thank you for this comment, it does explain what is happening very well. I just hate the fact that so many leaders are willing to make us targets, Canada hasn’t provided long range missiles but it has given other forms of military aid, and co-signing the “permission” of sending missiles into Russia just feels like its going to make things worse.
