There are two kinds of people who can be “just Marxist but not ML”
The first are academics who use Marx as a philosophical reference to approach other human and societal problems

Apparently it was “promoting hate of a marginalized community” for pointing out that the British were close with the Nazis and refused to ally with the Soviets. Rooting against leninists or stalinists is kinda weird cuz they were extremely successful. Lenin led a communist revolution of a barely industrialized society and Stalin won the largest, most technologically advanced war at that time against a sworn enemy.
