  • Ok, hear me out: this may be an opportunity to make a deal.

Because I am willing to bet that the number of people with citizenship due to “birth tourism” is far less than the number of DREAMers in the country. And I am also willing to bet that there are a lot of “accidental Americans” who were born here, then their family immediately went back home, and who do not consider themselves American in any way, yet the IRS wants to tax their income. (Wasn’t that clown Boris Johnson in this predicament, and have to formally renounce his US citizenship when he ran for UK Prime Minister?)

Schumer and Jeffries should call Donald Trump up right now and say that if he supports the DREAM act and adopts the bipartisan immigration framework from last year, then they will support an amendment that pushes this issue closer to what some European countries do: only give citizenship on birth to people who have at least one parent who is a US citizen, permanent resident, or has formal refugee status. They will have to carve out an exception for newborns who have no practical claim for citizenship anywhere else, but how often is a child born here whose mother has no citizenship claim anywhere else?

Heck, find a way to call it the TRUMP amendment and he will be instantly inclined to agree.

I am willing to make a bet that there is a way to modify things to be a net benefit for everyone: DREAMers get to stay, nobody becomes an “accidental American”, and, perhaps most importantly (to him), Trump gets to say he did a thing that neither Obama nor Biden did - amend the Constitution.

  • You are absolutely correct, but I stand by my statement that Trump can’t really do much to affect that now, particularly through executive actions that the next President can always revoke. Even if his pet Congress passes laws that have more staying power, passing them now gives advocacy groups plenty of time to challenge them. It’s simply too early to make changes that will stick.

It will be the job of whoever is President in 2029/2030 to set up that Census. If that person is a MAGA Republican, with a fully Republican Congress backing him (you know it will be a man, don’t you?), then the Census will be fucked. But there will be so much else fucked that hardly anyone will notice the Census being so.

  • This one isn’t worth anyone’s time worrying about right now, except for the proper advocacy groups who will challenge it right away, where it might get to the Supreme Court during this Presidential term, or might not. He tried to pull this when he was in charge of the last Census, and was blocked in the courts. Which means it can be challenged right up to the point where they formalize the questions a few months beforehand, so whatever he decides now can be changed by the next President.

For those of you who are about to post “We can’t even be sure he will leave office when the Constitution says he will”, you’re right, of course. But if that happens the Census will be so low on the list of how we are fucked up that it will end up being a footnote, so it’s not worth worrying about in either case.

  • Solana has a HOWTO on making a new token here:

    https://solana.com/developers/guides/getstarted/how-to-create-a-token

It requires some knowledge, but not really that much. Also note there are further FAQs in the bottom on other topics.

Anyone can create any arbitrary token. At the start they are all worthless. But there are ways to provide liquidity to exchanges and then use that liquidity to open a market. There is a Medium post here outlining one way to do it:

    https://medium.com/@solanatokennet/how-to-create-and-launch-a-meme-coin-in-less-than-0-35-sol-6d265dba9b15

From there, the marketing part of it is like any other pump and dump scheme. Associate it with some pop culture figure, create a fan base willing to pay for anything associated with it, milk them to get the price up, then dump all the coins you have been keeping for yourself directly into the market, absorbing all the demand and leaving everyone with worthless numbers on the Solana Blockchain.

(It is important to note that it is only this easy for tokens that are implemented on existing Blockchains, using Smart Contracts. The Blockchains themselves are not so easy to establish. Anyone can start their own Blockchain project but they have to get other people involved in their project to get any momentum. Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, even Dogecoin all have their own Blockchains whose history can’t simply be copied just because their code can be used to start up a new one.)

  • I worked in a place during the 2016 election with a lot of old-school Conservatives who hadn’t fully drunk the MAGA kool-aid yet, but did loathe Hillary with a passion. I vividly remember one of them explaining all of the meticulous research he claimed he did to go through the financial records Hillary released that prove that she was making all sorts of crooked money through speaking fees. When I pointed out that we didn’t even know where all Trump’s money came from because he didn’t release his taxes, he replied “That’s OK, I trust him”.

It will always be “rules for thee, not for me” with these folks. When the opposition looks like it is making any money at all it immediately looks suspect, but when their side does it it’s just capitalism.

  • Did the law give Trump the power to change the deadline through executive order?

Yes, it does, but only a one-time 90 day extension and only if the President says there is concrete progress toward a sale to a US entity. Of course, this President will say anything that benefits him personally, whether or not it is true. So he says the magic words, and all interested parties (Bytedance, Zuckerberg, Musk, etc.) continue to buy his shitty NFTs and tokens to influence his decisions.
