As the title sais. I’ve just created my account on lemm.ee and wanted to subscribe to some communities that I used to follow on Reddit.

For example, I’ve seem that there is ABoringDystopia on mander.xyz, so I tried looking for it using the search tool in the communities page, but nothing showed. I then tried accessing it using the url https://lemm.ee/c/aboringdystopia@mander.xyz, but all I got was the error 404: couldnt_find_community.

I’ve had similar issues with other communities too, from other instances.

The problem only affects some instances because I’ve been able to access communities on feddit.de, for example.

Can someone more navigated tell me what’s going on?

P.S. mander.xyz is even in the list of instances federated with lemm.ee, so I should be able to access its communities.

Hey! Unfortunately the process for becoming the first lemm.ee subscriber to a community on another instance is a bit clunky as of Lemmy version 0.17.4 - but it should improve in the future!

For now, I can see that https://lemm.ee/c/aboringdystopia@mander.xyz has successfully synced and you can become a subscriber. If you want to become the first subscriber of any other external communities, check out the “How do I join a community from another instance?” section in our FAQ, specifically the “Option 2” section.

Note that the first search will always say “No results”, but in the background Lemmy will kick off the sync and the results should appear in a minute or two!

If you have any trouble following those steps, let me know and I’ll help you out!

Thanks for the reply. I’ve been able to subscribe. I’ve also found this post that can be useful.

You’re telling me that when I access a community from another instance I won’t see the total number of subscriber, but the number of lemm.ee users subscribed?

Yep, that is showing the local subscriber counts. To be honest, the users/day or uses/month stats are probably much more useful, as those are not just local.
