Don’t you think it’s quite ironic that the subject I’m trying to avoid is being discussed in this post?

You can choose to ignore politics all you want to make yourself happy. Just be very much aware that politics won’t ignore you. And it doesn’t care about your happiness either.

You’re absolutely right. Still, I can’t change anything, even on an issue that I’ll be affected by. My only power is one vote in a million. I’m proud I’m using that power too 💪

Have you ever read Lord of the Rings by any chance? The main message is that the biggest change can come from the smallest and the most unlikely of places. I’ve always loved the series for that simple message personally. You have much more power than you give yourself credit for. You’ve just convinced yourself that you don’t.

Currently reading second book and loving it!

However, I still don’t believe that virtual conversations on the internet help with any issue. A protest? Boycott? Maybe. But not social media.

I should also remind you that LOTR is in a fantasy world :)

Social media is literally the biggest influence on public opinion, though. If it wasn’t, you wouldn’t have companies and governments sinking millions on trying to influence it.

Fantasy or not, the message is still relevant.

Even so, having full details on every single thing a political figure does isn’t going to make that much of a difference in how effectively you can persuade people. If someone isn’t persuaded by Trump’s 34 felonies, telling them that his lawyers are saying “one thing at a time please” isn’t going to give you an edge in the conversation.

Also, you need to be mindful of where you’re making your efforts. If you’re a lefty, posting lefty stuff on Lemmy isn’t going to do all that much. When was the last time you saw a conservative community on Lemmy? You’d be preaching to the choir.

You’d be surprised about how many actual conservatives exist here in Lemmy. I get into regular arguments over my viewpoints on the Israel-Gaza genocide since I’m not shy to vocalize them. The trolls exist here too. Lemmy gets more users by the day, the new ones also need to see what we as a userbase stands for as well.
