Goodwill is a charity. They run job training classes and other services with the funding they make. They also hire some disadvantaged people to work at the stores, but it’s more their general philosophy and is not their charity. You can look the org up on charity navigator, where it nets a very good 95% ratio and a 4 of 4 star ratings
As to the low wages paid to disabled staff, that is fucked up, bit I looked it up and posted about it elsewhere in thread:
As of September 1, 2024, only 10 of the 149 local Goodwills in the United States are reported on DOL’s list. Many of those organizations are in the process of transitioning away from using the certificate. GII does not hold a certificate, and we support local Goodwill leaders as they collaborate with people with disabilities, local employers and other service providers to create an array of community-based employment and other opportunities.
