I would think that more a consequence of the magnitude of his crimes + his history of nonpayment, leaving only desperate lawyers willing to be the next in line trying to defend one of the most obvious criminals in recent history and humiliating themselves in the process
If he uses advice of counsel defense, he has to waive attorney client privilege. Seems like a nice trap by special counsel.
