How bout just don’t install privacy-invading data collection services alongside a fucking device driver at all.

They provide relevant system information for issues which some people are willing to provide. Why not let them?

Crash reports are one thing, but web browsing data and enumerating devices on your local network go well beyond that objective

        From https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/support/topics/idsa-cip.html

Other devices in your computing environment

The categories of websites you visit, but not the URL itself, Includes universal plug and play devices and devices that broadcast

information to your computer on a local area network: for example, smart TV model and vendor information, and video streaming devices.

The categories of websites you visit, but not the URL itself, The information collected includes categorized web browsing history that shows how long and how often you visited specific categories of sites (i.e. social media, personal finance, or news). All site visits are classified into one of 30 categories. We do not collect URLs, web pages titles, or user-specific content without explicit permission from you.

Crash reports arent the only thing that is a result of a bug. Take for example, the bug involving high idle power consumption is not a crash related bug. The practical way to fix that is to juxtapose settings and conigurations of users receiving the said bug to see of its hardware or software related.

Because they invariably record way more data than they need to.

I know. I don’t disagree. I’m just tired of everything being desperate to collect invasive amounts of information about me.

How do you think these companies are supposed to make their drivers better and more compatible with the infinite PC configurations out there if they never get any data back about how their drivers are working?

I don’t know. How about if it crashes or you report a problem then you get the option to send that data along with it. That’s the model a lot of systems use.

I don’t understand why it has to be a thing that happens silently in the background and they just expect you to accept it, or more likely just not realise it’s turned on or what it does.

I mean it’s right there in the installer. You’ve got the option. If you’re installing beta software and not even bothering to read the options presented to you on the installer and what you’re agreeing to then that’s entirely on you.

I mean this intel thing apparently you have to explicitly choose custom install and then find it and uncheck the box if you don’t want it.

You know this thing records what “categories of websites” you visit, right? You really think it’s reasonable for intel to know your browsing habits (or how much porn you look at) because you installed a graphics card driver without scrutinising every single installer option?

It’s a beta. It’s about collecting telemetry. That’s literally what a beta is for.

GPU drivers affect everything that’s using the GPU, including browsing the web. Porn sites are actually probably a pretty good tester for graphics drivers since the websites are streaming video and displaying ads etc all over the place. Imagine if they released gpu drivers that pornhub, for example, didn’t work with!
