As an Irishman I have to say that I think the famine should be under the surface. So few people are taught about the atrocities committed and how many died because of it, and just like to laugh at me if I bring it up something like “haha they should have eaten something else”. Also, the troubles etc. are also at least partially due to capitalism. Fuck the imperial fucking British cunts

Also from Ireland. I’ve surprised even well read Irish people by suggesting capitalism is to blame for the various famines of the 19th century in ireland including the great famine.

Usually get a ‘hmmm I’ve never thought of that’ despite the fact that some of these people have actually read about the causes of the famine, criticised the British insistence on ‘laissez faire’, but still didn’t somehow put two and two together and blame capitalism itself.

Yep, generally meet the same conversation tbh

But I think that it’s partially cause Irish people don’t really bother thinking too much about these things or the past, even when reading about it. It’s part of a simplicity to some of us that I like, most just want to get on with it, if you know what I mean. Also, with a name like GerryMandering I have to say: Tiocfaidh ár lá mo chara!
