Work to remove old coal tips or make them safe could be “devastating” for some of Wales’ rarest species of wildlife, it has been claimed.

The safety of coal tips is under review after a major landslide in 2020.

But ecology experts have said they feel left out of discussions, even though these sites were home to rare and previously unknown species.

    I know we have had similar discussions in Cornwall about tips from China clay quarrying. Several “sky tips” are now favourite local landmarks, and have been stabilised by decades of vegetation growth, and form part of important heathland.

    The general consensus is now to keep those sky tips that still remain - we even have a St Piran’s cross flag on the top of one!

      Tend to agree with you here. At the very least, there should be a considerable amount of options for the locals to have a say in the projects.

      Failing that, at least take what the experts have to say into account.
