The George cross is indeed a British military award, that Malta received in 1942 for its bravery in WWII. Wikipedia article about the flag

It might be better for it to be replaced by a red Maltese cross of the same size, perhaps in the same location of the George cross in the present flag. EDIT: I imagine it’d look something like this
