the problem is you’re judging from your own limited and poor experience. Not all Americans are poor. Some are so filthy fucking rich it’s sickening. You could rightfully say MORE americans are dirt poor than in the 50s, but even if you just go back to the 20s you’ll see that the proportion of people living in abject poverty today is lower.
doesn’t make it good, doesn’t make it OK, but the new deal helped a bunch of people really leave living-in-dirt-shacks poverty to upgrade to filthy tenements and projects in the cities. there they have power, water, and indoor plumbing.
Now, go over to mother russia and check out Moscow - same thing. Poor people here and there, but most everyone’s living indoors and shits in a toilet. Then drive 3 hours outside the capitol: you’ll find people shitting in holes in 2023. Say what you will about socialism vs capitalism, at least the poor in the US got mostly upgraded from that level of depravity. NOT IN ANY WAY WILLINGLY BY THE CAPITALISTS, but yeah, it did happen.
