It just seems crazy to me given the power imbalance. A cynical part of me suspects that things are playing out exactly as some evil strategists hoped they would, which, given all the children dying, is super-depressing.

I’m so sick of this bullshit. They weren’t offering them anything remotely fair at any point in history. The land was stolen from Palestinians and then when they were forced into small pocket regions they were offered a terrible pittance deal that would always leave Isreal in far far better circumstances.
