    The rule really isn’t that old. However, the rule also places multiplication and division at the same level, processed left to right.

    What the rule doesn’t cover is implicit multiplication. The 2(2+2) are stuck together by implicit multiplication, thus you do that before the division, even though the division is to the left.

    If you replace (2+2) with x and divide by 2x, it makes much more sense.

    Also, if you put an explicit multiplication into the calculator, then it will give 16.
