      While democratic ideas and practices were not entirely absent in Europe before the establishment of the United States, they were generally limited and did not encompass democracy as we understand it today. The American Revolution and the subsequent founding of the United States played a significant role in popularizing and advancing the ideas of representative democracy, which later saw broader implementation in Europe, particularly after the French Revolution and throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.
