For me, it was, it is and it will be The Long Dark. Especially on Interloper difficulty and preferably during the winter time. One of my all time favorite games.
I mean, if you like survival games, this is the game that after playing it for some time, you will have adrenaline and euphoria spikes whenever you will stumble upon a box of matches… IRL.
But this is only my take. More seriously tho, this game is cold, harsh, punishing and really, really rewarding after getting familiar with the mechanics and learning the map. Still will try to kill you in a dramatic way on every occasion but you will feel better prepared for it.
You will get lost and confused, shredded to pieces by wolves, you will starve, dehydrate, freeze or break your legs, you will loose things, you will laugh through tears while making new mistakes and on top of that, you just may survive another night.
