In most cases i think, a good character cast is even more important than a good story. I want to like, want to hate a character in a game. That drives me more than a solid told story. And yes, Final Fantasy 7 has done a very good job. Even among jrpg’s or among Final Fantasy game, the characters of Final Fantasy 7 in my opinion, had a bigger impact that a lot other characters from games. Tifa and Cloud are charcters that even people that doesn’t have anything to do with Final Fantasy often know. Their fanart scene will never die. Final Fantasy 9, X was a good game as well, but i think Zidane and Tidus impact was not as big as Cloud’s impact. (My fav is still Yuffie, you don’t need to understand that)
Tifa being the childhood friend and remaining by Cloud’s side, while being equally soft and tough, is what sold me. I’m also a sucker for brunettes. I remember not caring too much about Aerith but the remake has completely changed my mind and I absolutely adore her. Yuffie on the other hand, bleh. To me she’s just an annoying kid. I did like her in Advent Children though.
Yuffie being a 16 year old kid is the point though. People are going to be more attracted to the 20 year old (Tifa) and the 22 year old (Aerith) women more than a high schooler. Especially when their personalities are portrayed as such.
There is a difference in liking someone and being attracted to someone. If i say someone is my fav char, that doesn’t mean i’m attracted to that char. I just played KH1 and FF7 dirge of cerberus first and kinda liked yuffie in all of those. So she got the char i want to play and like.
I was just responding to the crush part specifically. I honestly regret what I said earlier because after giving it more thought, I think the real reason Tifa and Aerith are more popular is because you don’t meet Yuffie until much later in the game, and Cloud is literally shipped with those two characters.

Well I was a kid too. Yuffie looked cool to me, especially in the official art and fanarts
