Original title: Was the site offline / having problems for anyone else?

Hello, I just came back and noticed that the site wasn’t working properly. Was this just me or did anyone else experience problems?

I’m browsing through logs to try find the reason, but it could have been just an issue on my side.

Thank you!

EDIT: I think I might have found the cause. I’ll keep investigating. Apologies for the downtime U_U.

EDIT2: I have located a database error which seems to be related to a sudden disconnection / shutdown. After that the database wasn’t able to work correctly until I rebooted the server. This can only come from a series of docker commands I ran this afternoon. It is weird that these commands don’t shut down the database container gracefully, but I’ll take extra precautions next time.

I didn’t notice any downtime of course as I would have been asleep at the time haha. I just wanted to jump in here and say that I really appreciate all the work you put into running this instance and maintaining it’s content. I know it is early days and the lemmy software isn’t super stable or easy to work with, not to mention the monetary aspect of the costs of the server time.

I’m just happy there’s somewhere non-commercial I can go now to see my strange combination of yiff, news, and memes. I’m sure we can all tolerate a bit of downtime here and there, so try not to worry about it too much when it happens. We know you can’t be available 24/7 so some downtime is inevitable, try not to fret about it too much when it happens. And for goodness sake don’t overwork yourself and get the burnout, I’m pretty sure that’s happened to several of the larger instance admins so far, I’d hate to see you befallen the same fate.

I was having problems earlier today, like 1:30pm EST. My frontpage wouldn’t load any posts unless I hit refresh a few times and my account wouldn’t show anything. I couldn’t post either. I tried resetting cache and cookies. When I tried to log back in it just cleared out the fields and did nothing.

Yes. Images hosted on the site had trouble loading and I couldn’t vote, then pages failed to load altogether. As @River says, it was about an hour back.

Thank you. That’s weird. Do you know if two hours before it was working?

I know I left home about four hours ago and it was working then. I’ll have a look at all logs about an hour ago.

At 12pm US central time, I was having problems so the time the site was down was longer. So it has been over 4-5 hours for me.

Okay, that makes sense. That was I was making some changes. This seems to have been related to the way in which I restarted the containers, which is weird because it should restart the database in a graceful manner but apparently it wasn’t so.

My mistake was leaving without checking properly that things were up again. I’ll make sure to write a message next time so that I can verify that things are back to normal by posting something.

Yep, I’ve been having problems logging in over the past few hours and ended up resetting my password a few minutes ago (apologies if I set off any alarms). Have also been getting 502s from the asset server, and 400 “Request Header or Cookie Too Large” from the API.
