    I think you’re right about the plate with studs. On the other hand, I’m pretty sure a tile without studs can be put between studs like that and be legal.

      That’s correct. Tiles are just slightly thinner than plates, making them legal to insert between studs.

          If it has studs on it, it’s probably a plate instead of a tile. But really you shouldn’t restrict your building by what’s “legal”. That just means it wouldn’t be allowed in an official LEGO set — for a MOC it’s totally fine.
