Do you see them as anticipation? Or just unnecessary stress in reading fanfics? Have you dropped fanfics that ended in cliffhangers?

Chapter cliffhangers are fun! I want to be engaged and wonder what will happen next. If the story itself ends on a cliffhanger… I guess that kinda depends. Is it setting up for a sequel? Is the author leaning into ambiguity? Both can work if the author can pull it off. I don’t think I would drop a fic for cliffhangers; I usually drop fics when I stop caring about the story/characters, or reading the story feels more like a chore than something fun that I look forward to.

  • I like them so long as I actually get the payoff. I really hate media that ends on a cliffhanger and then never gets finished.

TV shows seen to be all about it these days. Every single episode leaves on a wild cliffhanger so you wanna see the next episode as soon as it airs.

This. I love them, but fanfiction gets abandoned often enough that there’s a real risk that it never gets updated

I think it’s fine if a cliffhanger asks new questions, but if there are any unknowns or uncertainties during the story I’d rather have them answered by the end though.
