This is what it looks after cleaning. Permanently damaged due to rust but it’ll do for few more years.

Why did you have to look? Now the magic that keeps it all together has been dispelled. :(

I recently did my yearly service of filling the tires, I’ve literally never opened up the wheel hub of a bicycle in my entire life

I have had my frame about 16 years, when i repacked crank bearings I also cleaned and repacked wheel bearings. You have to do in an area where you can track down a lost ball, but they run nice with some lithium grease.

Those ball bearings are loose for a reason. Because you never fuckin open the hub for any reason

I restored a bike that I found at the bottom of a hill under an overpass (it was a 1970’s Schwinn and I just couldn’t let it die there!)

it was a mess but even that bike had a cleaner hub that yours!

    That looks fun.

I actually need to do that to my road bike wheel (though I suspect it won’t be covered with mud). 13,000+ miles on the wheel, but during the last ride it made a weird grinding noise and actually slowed down the bike a few times. I’m hoping to open it up tomorrow or Saturday.

This only has 5000km (3000 miles) but I think they packed it with mud at the factory.
