Former Mesa County Clerk Tina Peters filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday seeking to halt local, state and federal criminal investigations and prosecutions against her in a security breach of her county’s election system in 2021. The 43-page lawsuit was filed against U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold and Mesa County District Attorney Daniel Rubenstein. It claims their continued investigations into Peters violate her constitutional rights to free speech, freedom of association and right to petition the government to redress her grievances.

Those are important rights, but I’m failing to see how the justice system investigating her for serious crimes infringes on those rights, or how having those rights somehow means the government can’t investigate her. The fact she’s remained free to go where she wants, run for Secretary of State, attend Pillow dude rallies and spread lies since that election is proof they’re not infringing on any of her rights.
