I am playing Horizon Zero Dawn and haven’t gotten to the first main event, but it gives me this feeling like if I upgrade all my equipment now it might be for nothing. I know that is not the case, I looked it up, but what are some games that are the worst offenders? One I can think of is Aerith in the original FF7.

I was so mad at this. I did the first and second area meticulously. I think it was 2 hours of going through everything. Got the third area in first try.
Then i lose everything? Nah. No thank you
That’s the whole point of that game though. Like the core mechanic.
It leaves you with everything you need; your ever-growing skills as a player.
It leaves you with nothing each run, yet you consistently make it through zone after zone. It’s the most apparent indication of skill progression I’ve ever seen. Imagine if every time you rested at a bonfire in Dark Souls you emerged as a naked speedrunner. God damn would you have to be good at that game.
