Im not much of a gamer (ironically I make games for a living) but I made a bet with my kids that if the Detroit Lions make the playoffs this year I’ll buy them a system, and its looking like almost a lock to happen, so I want to get in on some Holiday deals.
This is their first non-Nintendo system so I’m a little lost on which way to go at this point in the generation cycle. For reference they’re 7 and 9 year old boys and are gonna be new to gaming that isnt based around crafting or Italian brothers. (i made them use my old NES, then SNES first, then got them a Switch a couple years back)
Ask your fuckin kids you freak. Why would reddit know what they want better than them?
Ask what they want / what their friends have.
In my honest experience, I recommend getting them a PC, preferably a desktop (so the rest of the family can use it at home too). A PC will let them develop curiosity and problem solving skills (googling, playing with config files, modding, etc), and allow them to be able to use PC’s and other technical devices without being soft-locked to the current generation’s tech disability with phones and Apps.
With respect to PS and Xbox, and other handheld/portable gaming devices… I’ve lost most of my eyesight to them while playing with my PS 1-3 and Gameboy; couldn’t see past 3 feet/1m by age 10. I wouldn’t want anything like that to happen to other kids.
Xbox has Rare Replay if you want to introduce them to some exclusive retro games, including Banjo-Kazooie and its sequel.
I also think Xbox controllers, while having fewer features than PS5 controllers, have greater longevity due to build quality. You can get rechargeable AAs and have a better battery situation than the PS5 controller’s, which may require a recharge after any longer session.
Get a gaming computer in my opinion they can play just about any game and you won’t have to deal with Sony who refuses to refund games that don’t work like dayz.
Just ask them which one they want. They’re old enough to know.
I mean PlayStation has spiderman, ratchet and clank, astro bot and sackboy for the kids.
Gamepass. Easy as that.
Best way I’ve heard Playstation and Xbox compared:
If you’re a social person who loves co-ops and playing with friends, go with Xbox. If you’re more solo and story-driven with games, Playstation has better options. Personally, I’m team Playstation.
I guess it depends on if you’re planning for the future or not… If they’re going to get gamer PCs at some point then ps5 will have more exclusives they won’t be able to enjoy while Xbox and PC share more library options with each other.
Also what will bring them the most enjoyment? What games do they want to play on this other consoles? Pick onr that has at least 2 or 3 games you can get them for chri6and birthdays or whatever.
In my personal observation full of bias, I’ve noticed that PS generally has more games of whimsy and colorful fun for all ages.
Cheaper games on the used market. By a lot.
I think ps5 or Playstation, in general, has an easier controller for beginners. It really matters what games they will want to play or what their friends’ systems are. If they want to play with friends, sometimes you can’t cross play ps5 and Xbox.
PC all the way - turn them into PC gamers! Seriously. Then they have good computers for school work in the future, and it can be used for other things.
