Look, I know people will hate this, I’m ready for it.
VAR has been crap this year no doubt about it I think almost every team has been at the recieving end of a bad decision (wolves seemingly more than anyone) so something needs to change. Here is my thoughts
-
Get rid of the VAR referees, they’re to disconnected from the game and any audio only gets released weeks after and only for controversial decisions, it’s all very cloak and dagger. I would only keep the video assistant in control of the different cameras available of any incident.
-
Not every decision is reviewed, no goal can be properly celebrated, every tackle is reviewed adding rediculous delays and times onto the game contributing to injuries. Instead, each team has a set number of challenges like in tennis where you can ask for something to be reviewed. In that case at the next opportunity the referee gets called to the monitor and with of the sole video assistant left is shown the moment again from different angles. This removes the bias that when you get called to the monitor you have to change your decision and it’s also not tainted by VAR officials pausing it on the worst frames etc.
-
If when reviewing the referee take more than 2 minutes to review them it isn’t clear and obvious and the infield decision stands
-
Get automatic offsides decisions in the game man, it isn’t hard
Changes I’d make. Scrap it.
I can’t believe the FA haven’t come on here looking for advice yet.
If you believe there is already bias in the system, has the system not failed already?
I think the correct change is: VAR can only be used to review goals and penalties. VAR ref needs to be on the side of the field and not in a booth so he can see it with his own eyes and get that reaction.
Doesn’t work.
Points 1 and 2… This would result in more wasted time, not less. You’d have basically at least 6 reviews per game, as towards the end why wouldn’t a manager just appeal on the off chance something is spotted. These won’t be quick, first the controller needs to decide what to show, then the ref needs to watch all these replays to come to a decision. before making his way back to the field… 6 times…
Point 3… This will drive people mad. A wrong decision will stand/be given as the ref couldn’t decide within 2 minutes. All people will say is it was obvious, just the ref wasn’t good enough to make his mind up quickly enough. This will add huge pressure on refs to come to quick decisions.
Point 4… the best one and better than the current system. I would still hate this as we shouldn’t be giving offsides for a kneecap being 2 inches offside. Level should mean level within reason.
For point 4 there will always be a line. You’re just moving the line to however far is now deemed too far offside
Very true… thats why I prefer old linos making the decision.
But to be fair… and to add context to all of the above… I’m hugely bias. I hate VAR and want rid of it. So take all my comments with a pinch of salt.
Var isn’t the issue. It’s how people apply the laws to var
Strong disagree with 1, should be the opposite. Give the VAR ref more control, take the pressure off the on field ref. Now the refs have to overthink every decision cause they don’t want to be judged wrong. 4 is the only reasonable idea
I think that, if you can’t determine a offside without VAR, it‘s extremely irrelevant and should not be taken to account.
Bring in RefBot from Robot Wars, never made any mistakes.
For the life of me, I can’t understand why they didn’t/don’t have a script to go off to confirm a decision when it’s made. Secondly, how they haven’t managed to come up with a way to get more accurate offsides. A couple more cameras on the opposite side of the linesman in each half or one that can travel end to end wouldn’t be that difficult surely?
Just automate the whole thing
It’s crazy how VAR has ruined the football experience for fans in the grounds. Listened to some Leicester fans on a podcast, saying how nice it is to celebrate goals again, as in, ball hits back of net… you go nuts, rather then wait 3-5 mins for it to be approved by VAR.
Automatic offsides are a must. From what I understand teams voted against this due to the costs of installing it at every ground?
I actually like how it’s implemented in Europe (most of the time), usually over the past two years, in Europe there has been a far higher bar for fouls (which I prefer).
I don’t have any issue with it in theory, I would rather the correct decision (even if it goes against my team) than making a quick decision, but the quality of the refs are so poor.
I actually hate all the “fuck var” or people blaming var, when it’s all human errors.
Keep var, get better humans to work it
World cup and fifa did auto offside the best no one complained and it was countries 😂
How about just give the on-field referee one more look at it, no VAR officials just someone to replay it. Let the on-field ref decide
That’s basically what I was suggesting
If I had to invent a way to fix matches as easily as possible…it would be the current VAR setup
what they need to do with var is have an ex-top flight ref in the var room as a rules consultant, who’s only job is to advise on the rules of the game and knows the rules with encyclopedic knowledge.
then all the var officials and users of the system need to be tech heads with experience in 3D imaging and motion design/implementation.
get the var users up to date on the laws of the game to a workable point, them put them to work.
- issue gets spotted, var watching in real time and is flagged for review. depending on issue game resumes/is delayed for no longer than 3 minutes.
- var room uses the tech to decipher whats happened, checks with the official in the var room for rules clarification.
- tells the ref their findings. if still unclear ref sticks to on field decision.
- automatic offsides and ball out of play.
i feel this should keep the var ref seperate enough from the refs mates club to stop them being matey with them and give the tech side of things to those who are used to and good with it rather than the arsey bloke who’s been running around cold pitches for 30 years and asks his kids how to post on social media.
