For me it’s Ian Wright. When I was about 10 he released his autobiography. He was doing a book signing tour and was in my local town. I cycled into town to try and meet him, and the line in the local Waterstones was out the door and down the street. I waited in line for well over 2 hours and his signing time was up. However, he remained there until the line was gone, not wanting to disappoint fans who had waited. When I was almost at the front someone from the shop said he will only sign copies of his book. I didn’t have one, nor did I have the money to buy one. But I waited anyway so I could say hi. When I got to the front of the line he was all beaming smiles and friendly chat, despite him having been there for over 3 hours at this point. He asked me if I wanted an autograph (this was before the days of mobile phone cameras) and I told him I didn’t have his book. However, I was wearing my Arsenal hat which I’d previously had signed by Paul Merson, Tony Adams, Nigel Winterburn, David Seaman and a few others. He took the hat and enjoyed himself for a couple of minutes trying to identify his teammates’ signatures, some of which were very difficult to work out. Then he signed my hat for me and gave me a hug. Honestly, he was absolutely the nicest guy.
