  • Develop standards, tools, and tests to help ensure that AI systems are safe, secure, and trustworthy.
  • Protect against the risks of using AI to engineer dangerous biological materials
  • Protect Americans from AI-enabled fraud and deception by establishing standards and best practices for detecting AI-generated content and authenticating official content
  • Establish an advanced cybersecurity program to develop AI tools to find and fix vulnerabilities in critical software
  • Order the development of a National Security Memorandum that directs further actions on AI and security

    Many of the measures in this EO seem like good things and are directed properly at agencies with areas of responsibility being impacted by AI. Some are kind of borderline on if it would hold up – I don’t know if adding additional requirements for research funding is necessarily something the executive branch can do, unless Congress delegated that authority entirely. In some areas it’s only calling on Congress to act.

    The first part is using the Defense Production Act, though, and that seems very suspect.
