Spirit Airlines issued an apology after putting a six-year-old unaccompanied minor on the wrong flight.

The child was set to fly on Thursday from Philadelphia International Airport to Southwest Florida International Airport in Fort Myers, Florida, to visit his grandmother, WINK-TV reported.

Instead, the boy was “incorrectly boarded” on a flight to Orlando, Spirit acknowledged in a statement on Saturday.

The statement did not address how the error came to take place - during a busy holiday travel day.

The second part of your statement is absolutely true. The first part however is iffy. This is the whole point of the unaccompanied minor thing, the airline is basically saying they will get the kid on the right flights when they allow you to purchase the tickets. Probably still wouldn’t send a 6 year old alone but theoretically that’s the point of this system which Spirit seems to have failed.

I flew alone at maybe 8/9 from Orlando to Detroit with a layover in Chicago and back again, no issues. There was even a problem with a connecting flight and the flight attendant/whoever stayed with me the whole time and we called my mom and my aunt who I was flying to see to inform them both of the delay. It was a great experience. This was pre 9/11 too so I got to go up and see the cockpit when we boarded and the pilot gave me a little toy model of the plane we were flying.
