    Then, on Wednesday afternoon, the ILWU unceremoniously, and without explanation, withdrew their new 72-hour notice to resume strike action by Saturday.

    Union officials got bribed.

      I suspect threatened with back to work legislation. I think jumping to bribed is a bit premature.

        Excuse my cynicism.

        If that’s the case though, I have to admit folding without even making them go through with the legislation is pretty sad. That sends a terrible message to companies and the government. Corruption or not, it’s just another bad outcome from this whole debacle.

          I agree that the leadership and negotiating team are being weak. If that threat was made they should have been shouting it to the heavens, not negotiating with bad faith actors in secrecy. But I’m willing to give them enough grace to assume they are cowards rather than blatantly corrupt.

          That said, the general membership still has to ratify it. They can still make an issue of things if they want it enough.
