I enabled that new setting to limit charging to 80% and it’s worked well so far but every once in a while, I catch the phone charging to above 80%. Like right now, my phone is saying it’s at 85% despite the 80% limit being enabled. I confirmed in the settings it’s still enabled and didn’t somehow get disabled.

Anyone else experiencing the same?

Mine is the iPhone 15 Pro 512GB

I haven’t tried using that, but I would always take the battery indicator reading with a bit of salt. I’d say it’s 95% accurate but not perfect. (Source: been repairing iPhones for a while). iOS 17 may also have some bugs there since it’s a newer feature. May be worth reaching out to apple directly if you’re able to replicate that often enough.

That said, I have had days where my battery will last until the next without an additional charge, but have had others where I will have to charge it sooner than expected too.

I have the same model iPhone; 15 Pro, 512 GB

    Hope that helps

Thanks for the feedback! That makes sense. I guess if it continues, I’ll try contacting Apple. Right now, it doesn’t happen on a continuous basis for me to replicate it.

You’re welcome! That’s good that it’s not a consistent issue. The only thing I can add to that would be basic things like; did this happen with a wired or wireless charger? Does a 3rd party charging block make a difference? Does this occur after an iOS restart or system update?

Just some food for thought if you see the issue often enough.

I’d like to provide additional feedback for you but since I haven’t used the feature the most I can do is provide the answers I have today. Always worth making a post about it like you did before reaching out to apple. Maybe someone else will see this post and provide another perspective as well? Either way, I’m sure the battery going past 80% on occasion will see a patch eventually

          Thanks for the helpful suggestions.

Another user replied here and apparently this is normal according to the link found there to help with the phone’s metrics for battery usage.

Anytime. And I just saw that. I learned something new today. If that’s how it’s designed that should indeed help with battery longevity

With 80% Limit enabled, your iPhone will occasionally charge to 100 percent to maintain accurate battery state-of-charge estimates.

From the “learn more” link on the settings page.

Oh wow, TIL. Thank you for sharing that information and how you found it. Seeing how it will occasionally charge back up to 100% I may start using this feature as well.

The reason I had not yet was from seeing how other devices were affected in the past. Usually just a hard cutoff at 80% and never charged above that. Eventually even if you tried, for those devices the battery couldn’t charge to 100% again after a while. Having the iPhone occasionally charge to 100% should resolve that.
