According to Jack Dickey of Time, Alton claimed to have left the Southern Baptist church over among other things it’s anti-gay views but I’d personally need more atonement from someone as formerly openly republican as he was/is than a secondhand allegation he claimed SBC was too anti-gay even for him. A statement direct from Alton disavowing his previous views and efforts to oppose current Queer oppression.
I also read rumors he was gay but it was on a tabloid rag I won’t believe if it printed that the sky was blue.
