I guess whoever is up earliest on a Thursday gets to make it, and isn’t being up really early cause enough for complaint in itself? Hmm, this is far too deep philosophy for so early in the morning.

Anyway. My main complaint this week is that our new neighbours have got a new tiny puppy. It’s a little bulldog type thing I believe, but absolutely tiny so even the couple of glimpses I’ve had of it running around the back garden it’s been mostly hidden in the grass.

The complain is not the existence of a new tiny neighbour, it’s that I can’t think of a not-socially awkward way of meeting it.

I demand to meet the puppy!

Anyway how’s your Thursday? Get it all off your chest before the weekend, that’s the healthy way.

It’s still raining. We’re supposed to be going away for another camping weekend but I cannae be arsed. At least I managed to dry out the tent from last week. Might just dingie the whole thing and deal with the railway works that are scheduled out back for Saturday night. Scottish summers…

As we sat in our cozy living room all weekend, me under my electric blanket, binge watching Futurama over the absolute racket of it pissing down against the roof of the conservatory, I thought of you and yours and your ill-fated camping trip. Hope you managed to have a bit of a nice time regardless.

Honestly, it wasn’t too bad. I had a new super comfy sleeping mat so I popped in the earplugs and slept right through. It was only the nights and the last day that were especially rainy, and the campsite had a bothy so I ran over there on the last morning with the Aeropress and made some fresh coffee out of the rain. The main issue was the soggy tent, which is dry now. I just don’t know if I can face a second trip if it’s going to be raining the whole time, especially if I need to pitch the tent in the rain. Luckily this time the campsite is less than an hour away, so we can wait until the last minute to make a decision

I demand to meet the puppy

Put on a suit; look semi-professional looking, go round and introduce yourself as the city’s puppy inspector.

One of those mornings where the fruit, the cereal AND the milk all ran out while getting breakfast, so the worktop was strewn with open boxes and containers and debris by the time I had filled a bowl. Plus the other half’s usual morning tea wasn’t there so I had to guess which of the dozen other fruit or herbal teas would be acceptable.

And then, we had had a new food and milk delivery thing and they had left it all (how many boxes? can we really eat all that? what the hell are half of these things?) over by the woodshed, and it’s raining, so a damp two-part excursion to retrieve it - and I needed some of that milk.

All before I had actually eaten anything or fully woken up.

Stuff going to work. I just want to get back under the duvet now.

What’s boiling my piss today is a bit nerdy, so apologies up front.

Why do 3rd party providers only make their scripts available via bloody iframes??? Honestly Stripe, I now can’t style or access the DOM for any part of the card fields!

This brought me back to my last office job, working mostly on ecommerce sites. Do not envy you having to try and explain to whoever why you can’t do this.

It gets worse - Stripe seem to have replaced their front line support staff with a irritatingly upbeat AI. It’s clearly a cheap knock-off as the ‘I’ part of it is lacking…

        That’s “so few”!?

I’ve never subscribed to a large amount of things on any platform (whether it’s one where you follow people or communities) and I always feel like it gets unwieldy after like… 20 subs. 🤣

I have no idea how you’d manage such a huge list as I already feel like I don’t see a lot of content I’d want to see!

Yeah it’s tricky on here until they get the sorting algorithms balanced a bit better. As soon as you sub to something big and active, that’s it for your chances of seeing smaller communities pop up in the feed.

I’m subbed to probably 200 or so communities and magazines by now across two accounts, but have to keep checking different sort modes otherwise a lot of stuff gets missed. That’ll be ironed out over time though I’m sure!

Neighbours across the road got a new lab puppy last week. I’ve been out lingering in the vain hope I’d get to clap it, but nope, no luck.

I’m late - it’s Friday after all - but I’ve been trying to look for jobs to get away from where I currently am, but just can’t find anything worth it that I could do.

I’m a minimum wage admin worker, at a job where they don’t offer WFH, and I’m in an office from 9 to 6 every day.

I just want something with a bit more money, or a bit more time, or something like hybrid remote, but it feels like anything that offers anything beyond the minimum requires extremely specialised qualifications or experience, but I don’t have any of this stuff, I’ve just been a grunt worker my entire life.

I’d love to learn something or pick something up but I’m always at work so feels like I don’t have the time to do it - I’m already falling behind on just looking after my house! Job market and career progression seems messed up, but I have no real idea what to do about it.

That sucks, and I remember exactly how it feels. Worked in admin for years myself until deciding to learn web dev and go for that instead. But you’re right that sometimes the energy for retraining just isn’t there.

Admin is ridiculously underpaid given how quickly everything would fall apart without it. And it takes skill to keep things running efficiently, so no idea why it’s so unappreciated.

Solidarity may not be worth much, but it’s all I’ve got to offer.

Train strikes. People paid more than me who are incapable of living while making sure I earn less. Brilliant.

I know it’s more about erosion of terms and conditions but I still get wound up.

You got yourself a downvote for this but I getcha. You can understand and support people standing up for themselves and still be annoyed at the personal inconvenience of it. Situation sucks for everyone involved.

Exactly that. There’s no winners, the train companies will just continue to crush workers and drive customers away while the papers and government seem convinced everyone now works from home.
