England midfielder Keira Walsh was taken off on a stretcher during her side’s Women’s World Cup game against Denmark.

The 26-year-old went down 35 minutes into the game with her side 1-0 up, thanks to a goal from Chelsea’s Lauren James.

The Barcelona midfielder had lunged to cut out a pass, but seemed to get her foot caught in the turf and stayed down, before gesturing to the England bench.

She appeared to say “it’s my knee” and was consoled by team-mates before being replaced by Laura Coombs.

On Walsh’s injury, England head coach Sarina Wiegman said after the game: “It did look serious but I don’t know. If you can’t walk off the pitch then it’s serious but we’ve just finished the game. I haven’t heard anything yet. It’s horrible for her but we have to move on with the game.

“I think they (the team) did a great job, the team picked it up but of course, it’s not nice to see a player on the pitch that needs to go off on a stretcher. It’s not nice. But I think the team picked up really well and really had to fight for the win and that’s what we did.”

Walsh was later pictured on crutches at the Allianz Stadium in Sydney.
