"Our cancer-killing pill is like a snowstorm that closes a key airline hub, shutting down all flights in and out only in planes carrying cancer cells," says the professor who has been developing the new drug over the past 20 years.
Call me beyond sceptical but this will probably turn out just as many of the trials before it that had no viable results once out of in vitro phase - because pharmaceutical industry (which is probably the most corrupt industry in the world) would not allow (at least at this time) a drug that can singlehandedly wipe out enormous chunk of their earnings.
I have Crohn’s, you have no idea how many times I’ve read about “breakthrough” and “miracle” drugs that will “cure” Crohn’s that end up not viable in double blind studies.
Mhm, you might be right. But imo it’s nice to hear about any kind of progress even if it might end up not working because at the end of the day it’s one step closer to finding a cure and ofc that would be amazing.
Also sorry to hear you have Crohn’s btw. I don’t have it but ik someone who does and I know it’s a real pain for eating :(.
Agree, progress is nice. But, drugs for diseases we don’t know how to cure yet are based on presumptions what might cause the disease and they have all been wrong so far (regarding cancer and Crohn’s).
Thank you. I had my fair share of trouble when I was younger, but now I’m OK. Hope your friend gets better, too!
BIL has this as well so we also follow these articles and have been disappointed many times previously. Like you, I struggle between accepting that it’s a hard nut to crack VS big pharm being complacent in keeping a cash cow. We know big auto prefers to pay out for critical errors that kill an acceptable number of people vs fixing it if it’s more profitable so why not here too? I hate MBAs. They are the bane of the world.
That’s very unfortunate. For most of us, misleading clickbait is a mild inconvenience. For you, its real disappointment.
You should really implement a strict policy of not clicking clickbait titles. While this would remove your ability to read 75% of news, it would probably help a lot in the sanity dept.
I generally don’t click it myself, and it does help. The algorithm will slowly pick up that you are uninterested in them.
You don’t think any pharmaceutical company would jump at the chance to literally oust every other cancer drug on the market for their own, bigkix? Lol.
This doomsaying shit regarding vaccines and cancer cures is pure insanity from conspiracy nuts that have bled into popular culture like antivax shit did.
It literally makes no sense when stress tested at all for the reason I gave above.
Not only that but it shows how little the layperson knows about how cancer works and why there’s no such thing as a miracle cure. If there even is one day, it’ll be just like your flu shot with 4-6 different concotions. Most of which will probably be training your own body to kill it. Like a vaccine lol. Likely for that specific type of cancer too. Not all cancers.
I don’t believe that a drug that would be taken for some time, no matter the cost, would be more cost-beneficial to pharma company more than all the drugs combined to treat cancer (first occurence and likely possible relapses).
On the one hand, yes. The media always reports on the latest discoveries as miracle cures, even when they’ve only been tested on mice or in vitro and it’s still far far too early to tell if they’ll work in humans.
On the other hand, cancer is no longer a death sentence. Not so long ago it was. Now most people survive cancer, in some countries survival rates have gone up by as much as a third since 2000. And that’s not just due to prevention. Advanced cases, which were once considered terminal, are now curable.

that you actually believe this is both hilarious, and sad.
Why?

Which algorithm? Lemmy doesn’t track our interests afaik.
Correct, if you only use Lemmy, you would not need to worry. But most people still use google products.
