This is how I feel. Every time I see a video of somebody in a gym all I can think is that while I appreciate the need and results, holy shit I would be so bored I would die. The idea of standing in place and doing the same repetitive motion for 20 minutes sounds like a nightmare to me.

…is what I said, before podcasts existed.

I mean, don’t get me wrong, I still don’t go to the gym. But if I did, I would listen to podcasts.

This is going to sound like i’m sponsored or something. But I just recently purchased a relatively cheap (200$) vr, and Beatsaber alone is making me stay active for about an hr a day at least for the past two weeks. I often get bored and lack motivation but LOVE rhythm games. Just a suggestion.

I tried using VR to exercise with that very mediocre Avengers game (bad choice on my part, I know), but really my problem there just comes down to having a small house that really doesn’t have anywhere with enough necessary place to really make that work.

Otherwise I think beatsaber is a GREAT suggestion for me, as I was formerly a massive DDR nerd

Fair enough, I have the meta quest 2 and you can set stationary boundaries so as long as you can stretch your arms out you’ll be fine. I thought the same thing about lack of space and then was able to play in my small glorified closet of a room.

Maybe I can make it work by standing sideways in my office… I might go this route.

I’ve heard you can mod in your own songs; do you have any experience with modding Beatsaber? If it’s easy to do, that might be even more compelling reason for me

I modded it the day I bought my vr, it was kind of a hassle but there’s a discord you can ask for help. It gives you access to 90k songs that you can search for and download in game.

This is why you would pick a sport with some form of game to make the exercise more fun.

Yeah I’ve considered looking at some kind of boxing or maybe some kind of fitness focused martial art instead. I think having something I can more easily either gamify or look at as a skill to progress on will make the idea easier.

I definitely recommend martial arts, I’m a long term practicionner and it only gets more interesting and motivating.

I have all my workout equipment in my garage with a projector and a Bluetooth speaker. I watch a movie, listen to podcasts, watch a game, u name it. I just do my reps, and then back to the show or whatever for my rest time in between reps. It’s a good way to break up the monotony imo

I recently got into hiking, which provides some nice changes in scenery!

Granted, that’s hard to do as a regular thing multiple times a week. But still, a walk around your neighborhood, or especially local parks if you’ve got any sizable ones, might be fun in a way going on the treadmill isn’t.

Jazzercise, believe it or not. That workout was always my favorite, just complicated enough to turn my thinking off but not so complicated I had to really think about what to do. And the music keeps up with the times, and dancing is a euphoric thing to do. Unfortunately the only place that still has it is too far, driving 20 minutes there makes no sense. Now it’s just yoga and weightlifting, my agility has suffered.

It’s like a Goldilocks thing. Running is too simple and I keep thinking, actual dance class I have to think too much. Jazzercise was perfect.

Audio books. Or ebooks, or real books. You aren’t doing a stupid repetitive activity, you’re actively reading.

If you’re doing the same repetitive motion for 20 minutes, you’re working out wrong.

Plus, you can listen to music or audio books during to keep you distracted.
