Sorry if this has already been asked, but is there a way to know if kbin is or is not federated with another instance? I know there is a way to block domains by typing in https://your kbin instance/d/domain you want to block and blocking them from there, but is there a way to see a list of instances defederated by default?

Thanks

I’ve seen this question a number of times since first joining, and never an answer. Also nothing that jumps out in the git pages mentioning it. Perhaps the idea is that because the user has more control in kbin than in Lemmy it’s more open to each user’s choices. Also, under the federation icon that can turn all federation on or off there’s the mysterious “Instances:” that never has anything. Perhaps that’s a placeholder for something.

Darn - I was afraid this might be the case.

I was also wondering what happens if someone from a defederated instance upvotes/downvotes you or your post. Is that even possible?

I am still figuring out this fediverse stuff lol

Kbin federates upvotes but does not federate downvotes. All downvotes are from people on the local instance only.

Lemmy federates both but downvotes only go to other Lemmy instances, not Kbin instances.

It’s all a bit crazy, yes.

Ah that explains such a lot!

Several times now I’ve been puzzled by Lemmings talking about their downvotes when I can’t see any.

people complaining about downvotes always have so many upvotes. it is like begging.

i always find it very strange when someone edits a comment 15 mins after posting to direct a complaint to like 1 person who downvoted them. do they just sit there refreshing the page until the number changes?

I wonder now if this is part of what makes kbin so chill.

Most of us hardly ever downvote each other because our downvotes are public.

But on the lemmys, if they’re all downvoting each other (and us) like crazy, we would never even know about it.

Public downvotes really do seem to deflate the whole “I’mma jump on this downvote hate train without talking a nanosecond to read or think about what I’m downvoting” problem. I admit, I was skeptical of the public votes thing when I first arrived here, but I’m growing to like it

I tried to speculate on an answer, but after several tries I’m not sure now either. Federation is a lot more complex a situation than just a simple ban (perhaps). It doesn’t seem an absolute like if you blocked a single user, since communities can be separately blocked and that wouldn’t affect an instance user from interaction with a kbin post or user elsewhere.

I’m on lemm.ee and at the bottom of pages there is an instances link that takes me to a page of instances that lemm.ee itself has defederated from. Maybe kbin has one of these? (I don’t see one there…) I’m curious as well tho.

It looks like it is possible on other instances? Beehaw apparently has a list of federated and defederated instances, but it also looks like it might be manually updated by their admins.

    Does kbin have something similar?
