If we couldn’t stop micro transactions at horse armor we’re not stopping this. The lure of Sony exclusives is going to outweigh privacy concerns every day of the week.

You also have to understand that releasing on Steam is only short term action, the plan is going be to bring PSN to PC and to release Sony hardware to go with it. Steam has had it too good for too long and Microsoft’s aggressive moves over the past couple of years has forced Sony’s hand.

People don’t (or shouldn’t) vote only when they know they’ll get what they want. That’s a good way to never get anything done. The only way to achieve anything is by acting with conviction and encouraging/hoping others do the same.

so you’re going to quietly take all the shit they feed you? Being loud, obnoxious, and defiant gets results, sitting and being silently sad about the state of things just allows those who don’t know any better to provide the feedback money men are looking for.

What shit? As far as I can tell they are being completely transparent about their designs to acquire your data.

How exactly do you suppose a device like the Steam Deck even came to be? By harvesting user data, now Sony wants a seat at the table and suddenly they’re the fucking bogey man? Give me a break.

Well there’s the monthly hardware and software survey and whatever users didn’t willingly provide was probably bought from Google. I mean I wish I could find a source but it doesn’t take a genius to figure out how companies who want to sell you things would go about selling you things. I could if you ask nicely, give you a basic summary of how marketing data is used by entities seeking profit to R&D products and services.

This is gold. Imma remember this one fondly.

I’m not accusing Valve of anything, other than presenting the likely scenario of how using monthly hardware and software survey in conjunction with data bought from Google went towards the development of the Steam Deck. If you cannot accept that as a plausibility that’s your problem not mine. The proof you keep getting your gaiters in a twist over could only come from corporate espionage or Valve themselves releasing to the public.

Picking my statement apart did you no favors in trying to prove your point. Honestly don’t know what your point is other than you’re mad I’m not on my knees gargling daddy Gabe’s balls as hard.

depends on context of what youre trying to do. just because it has failed once means its failed in the history of all games.

take for a old major game for example that is one of the progenitors of microtransactions maplestory. back in 2020/2021, nexon in Korea did some underhand shit, and whales in the game collectively created a round table to demand changes to the game and succeeded. result of all the underhanded shit caused a 9 million dollar lawsuit and fundamentally changed aspects of the game. On the Global server, a user was about to hit level 300 (the current cap) and the company advertised his stream, instead of hitting 300, he spent 45 minutes ranting about how broken the game is, then logged off without leveling with a 20k viewership on twitch. 2 days ago they push out a notice adressing that they are trying to change a lot of the longstanding problems that the rant adresses directly.

never say it never works, but it can, but doesnt always work.

I understand what you’re saying but there will never not be mtx in games. Even if these guys are getting raked over the coals the only lesson being taken away is to nickle and dime you slower.

but thats when youre trying to have a situation where decisions are binary. the idea of binary sides is what causes defeatist attitude for change when things arent binary. Just because mtx wont go away doesnt mean you should stop trying to make it less worse than it is.

an example is the movement to 70$ games. we well all agree that its eventually going to happen, but it doesnt stop that you can make it less worse now as in the past year, several back to back viral games werent AAA priced titles.

I’m not a defeatist, I’m just wondering if this battle is worth making a stand at when in order to change the gaming industry you first have to change the nature of industry itself. At what point do you stop trying to save the Titanic and start drawing plans for the Titanic II?

its why you choose your battles, some are much more reasonable than others.

for instamce the battle for Sony trying to get pc players to buy consoles to play the sequel i already know the outcome and is a pointless fight, as a majority of PC players arent going to buy a console to play a sequel of a title that they liked. people didnt rush to go out and buy a ps5 to play god of war ragnarok, nor FF16, nor FF7 rebirth, nor cave to play Ghost of Tsushima, nor Horizon Forbidden West.

the situation with Sony login requirement is definitely something that is challengeable and not a lost cause.

Not every drop of orange juice is worth the squeeze.

You’re right. But it’s not a question of buying consoles, it’s a matter of creating a free account. The majority of people have been conditioned to do so all their lives they won’t question another. If you really want to make a difference choose better battles, how about going after the system that allowed this problem to exist in the first place instead of getting caught up trying to put out the symptoms.

I dont know really, I haven’t played any sony titles since the ps2 days and looking at their catalogue there is nothing that really interests me. The only exception being helldivers, though I would have refunded that if the psn crap went through. It is also more an arrowhead than sony game.

I dont think I have steam friends playing actual sony games either, perhaps my perspective is skewed but I believe you overestimate the pull of the console franchises for people who can choose out of an enormous selection of games on steam, with plenty high profile ones available.

It’s likely that you and your friends are not indicative of the average user. I’m certainly not, the games I play are not reflective of what is popular in market.

It’s not pull of console franchises that would win people over but ease of access that will. It’s the whole reason consoles exist in the first place.

Players: Well, Sony, we’re pretty evil too. Many of us have no compunction about sharing and playing cracked versions of your games. More importantly, however, is that if you keep your games in your walled garden… no one will care. We can get exponentially more options and variety than you can ever offer, and with better frame rates and player experience than you can provide. Take your football and go home. We’re playing all the other sports.

Part of me wishes that Valve would simply tell these publishers that require 3rd party launchers and accounts to run their games to fuck off their platform; at the very least they warn about it on the store page I suppose. It’s not like Steam is any less of a DRM platform after all (though you can access the API to download games on unsupported platforms like OpenBSD).

I’m not necessarily opposed to needing a third party account for a game. VRChat for instance requires it but that makes it easy to use your same account on many different devices/platforms.

That said, Sony has a long track record of leaks, hacks, terrible and outright illegal practices and is generally shitty to their customers. So no, hell no, I will not sign up with them for anything.

I buy the games I wanna play because Steam makes the process hassle free on Linux and I’m old so I don’t feel like tinkering most days but PSN isn’t available here so there is no other way to play but piracy to play these games.
