Dunno if this is off topic, mods feel free to delete if it is, but I picked up a laptop that’s a couple years old that needs a fan replacement. I’ve done a little googling but it’s not clear which part(s) I need, where I could buy it, and if it would even be cost-effective to replace anyway.
I can post pics/more info in a couple hours, but in the meantime could anyone point me in the right direction where I can buy laptop fans or a guide on figuring out which fan I would need? I’m not worried about voiding any warranty or anything like that
Edit: the model number is 15-ek0018ca if that helps!
most fans are commodity parts. Match voltage, match length, match width. Disco.
Oh awesome, I was worried it’d be some bullshit proprietary crap, thank you!
Have you checked ifixit? And supplying the model number would be a great help
No I haven’t, it looks like a fantastic resource, thank you! And the model # is: 15-ek0018ca
I’ll be sure to check out ifixit after work, thanks again!
https://www.ifixit.com/Answers/View/797591/cooling+fan+replacement+needed+for+15-ek0015tx This seem to be what you’re looking for. Good luck with the repair! If its not needed as an actual laptop, trying to watercool it might be a fun project. I remember LTT making a video about it.
Your laptop has two fans. The 15-ek00xx models used 12v and 5v fans depending on the particular configuration. You can buy each one from
this Amazon sellerBefore you do, open the case up and look at the fans to see which ones you have.
here’s the 15-ek000 service manual
E: I just read the relevant section of the service manual and you gotta pull the heatsink to replace the fans. Buy some thermal paste so you can reapply while you’re in there.
Just wanted to say good luck I had a laptop and its fan died twice. Replacing the fan the first time was such a hassle that the second time it broke I saved up for a desktop.
Thank you! I’ve heard this kind of maintenance is a pain in the ass for laptops but I hate throwing out electronics that are fine aside from one component! Maybe this experience will change my mind but the fan replacement seems (relatively) straight forward
