It would be cool if one day humanity could capture an asteroid from space and bring it down here. Maybe even to mine it.
The value of the material is that it already is in space. Getting stuff into orbit is incredibly costly. Parking an asteroid in orbit would allow us to mine it and then fabricate space installations on the asteroid and/or using materials from it.
We’re going to need materials on earth too.
If you want to mine it, you definitely don’t want to bring it down into a gravity well first.
I would love to know if it’s possible to have controlled landing of an asteroid, like in a desert or something. What is the maximum size you can land without destroying the planet?
