    if they had to openly confront this, they’d realize their ideology is based on being a selfish asshole, which would at best (for them) invite social ostracism from other people recognizing them for the assholes they are, and at worst cause a whole identity crisis from seeing the contradictions in their ideology.

    My experience is that they know that their ideology is based on being a selfish asshole, but they are so cowardly and doomer that they have chosen the “if you can’t beat them, join them.” path and are desperately trying to get rich to “win” the game of capitalism to escape the working class or at least live comfortably. So many of them want to start a business or be an “entrepreneur”.

    They have sadly bought into the “eat or be eaten” fash brainworms.
